Use the Smart Terminal Flex to create and process in-person orders, sync with your online catalog, view your transaction and payout history, and strengthen your brand with customized receipts. Follow the steps below to set up your Smart Terminal Flex, test it out and get everything ready to process orders.
Step 1: Install the battery
Your Smart Terminal Flex comes packaged with an Li-ion battery and a USB-C power adapter. You’ll need to install the battery before you can charge the device.
- Make sure the Smart Terminal Flex is off and the power cord is disconnected.
- Turn the device upside down and open the battery cover on the bottom of the system.
- Insert the battery plug into the socket, making sure the connection is tight.
- Place the battery in the battery compartment and replace the battery cover.
Step 2: Charge the Smart Terminal Flex
For best results, make sure to charge your Smart Terminal Flex completely before you use it. This is especially important when you’re using it for the first time. It usually takes about 2.5 hours to fully charge.
- Plug the USB-C cable into the port on the side of your device and connect it to a power source.
- Allow the Smart Terminal Flex to fully charge (usually about 2.5 hours). While it’s charging, you can lightly tap the power button on the side of the device to see the current battery charge.
- Once the Smart Terminal Flex is fully charged, press the power button on the side of your device for three seconds to turn it on.
Step 3: Complete first-time setup
Once you’ve charged up the Smart Terminal Flex, connect to wi-fi and sync it to your account. When you first turn it on, you’ll just need to tweak a few settings and then you’ll be ready to go.
- Once your Smart Terminal Flex is fully charged, press the power button on the side of the device for three seconds to turn it on.
- On the Welcome screen, select your language from the list, then tap Continue.
- Tap the Wi-Fi network you want to use for transactions. To securely process payments, be sure to connect to a private, password-protected network (WPA, WPA2 or WPA 2SK). Enter your network password, then tap Connect.
- Your Smart Terminal Flex will check for software updates, configure the card reader, check your account activation status, and configure additional settings. Allow the device a few minutes to download, install and reboot.
- After connecting to wi-fi, follow the onscreen directions to scan the QR code from your welcome email using the front-facing camera (above the Smart Terminal Flex screen).
Step 4: Load a roll of printer paper
The Smart Terminal Flex includes one roll of thermal printer paper. You can order additional rolls using the link below or purchase them from any store that sells office supplies.
- Recommended brands: MUNBYN, Thermal King, SJPACK, Gorilla Supply, FungLam
- Paper dimensions: 2.25” x 50’
- Direct purchase: 50 rolls
Loading the paper:
- Open the paper roll cover at the top of the device.
- Insert the paper roll into the compartment and pull the roll until about two inches of paper extends from the top of the device.
- Hold the end of the paper and close the lid cover until you hear a "click."
- Remove the excess paper by tearing along the serrated edge.
Step 5: Complete a test transaction
Run a test transaction to make sure everything is working as expected. You’ll need to use your own credit or debit card for this. But don’t worry – you can void out the charge after you’ve processed it and there won’t be any charges or fees.
- From the Smart Terminal Flex home page, tap Terminal to access the keypad.
- Enter a small amount like $1.00, then tap Charge.
- Insert, tap or swipe your credit card. (Problems reading the credit card? Check out our troubleshooting tips for help.)
- On the customer-facing screen, enter your signature when prompted, then tap Done.
- On the customer-facing screen, tap Paper Receipt to print out the receipt. Don’t skip this! You can make sure your printer is working correctly AND look at how your info displays on your receipt.
- Your test transaction is now complete! But–now we need to void that charge. Here’s how:
- Return to the home page and select Transactions.
- You should see the charge you just processed. Tap the transaction, then Void.
- Tap Yes.
- Tap Close. The transaction now shows Voided, meaning the charge will not be applied to your credit card. In the future, you’ll follow this same process whenever you need to void or refund a charge.
